Karun Nair Stakes Test Claim with Unbeaten 186 on Day 1 Against England Lions

Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel hit fifties as India A dominate in Canterbury

By Nagraj Gollapudi | May 30, 2025

Canterbury: Karun Nair made a resounding statement on the opening day of the first unofficial Test between India A and England Lions, remaining unbeaten on 186 as India A finished at a commanding 409 for 3 at stumps. With the senior Test squad set to begin its England series next month, Nair’s innings will undoubtedly put him in contention for a middle-order spot.

Coming in early after captain Abhimanyu Easwaran fell cheaply, Nair showcased a wide repertoire of strokes — cover drives, steers, pulls, and even reverse sweeps — en route to his 24th first-class century. He was particularly strong on the off side, repeatedly piercing the gaps between point and mid-off with precise timing and footwork.

Partnerships Anchor India A’s Charge

Nair first rebuilt the innings with Sarfaraz Khan, who struck a fluent 92. The pair added 181 runs for the third wicket. Later, Dhruv Jurel, unbeaten on 82, joined hands with Nair in a partnership worth 177 at the close of play.

The England Lions bowlers, led by Josh Hull (2 for 51), toiled with little success. Their inexperience showed on a flat pitch, as they failed to capitalise on the few chances presented — including two dropped catches when Nair was on 62 and 89.

Nair’s Road Back

At 33, Nair is seeking a return to the Indian Test XI, having last played in 2017. Despite a triple century to his name in only his third Test — against England in Chennai — he has struggled to retain a spot. With India entering a new World Test Championship cycle and post the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, selectors have included Nair in the 18-member squad, eyeing him for a possible No. 6 role.

His performance today, on Day 1 of India’s lengthy England tour, is not just timely but potentially pivotal.
