In a notable shift, US President Donald Trump credited the leaders of India and Pakistan for ending the brief conflict between the two nuclear neighbors from May 7 to 10. This stands in contrast to Trump’s repeated earlier claims that he personally brokered the ceasefire deal.

Trump made these remarks after a rare White House luncheon meeting with Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir. He praised both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Munir for choosing peace and preventing what could have escalated into a nuclear war.

The meeting also covered topics including the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict and prospects for enhanced US-Pakistan trade ties. Trump expressed interest in long-term strategic cooperation with Pakistan and India, recalling his earlier meeting with Modi in February.

While the Pakistan Army acknowledged Trump’s “constructive” role in facilitating the ceasefire, Modi told Trump in a phone call that the military halt resulted from direct India-Pakistan talks without US mediation.

Field Marshal Munir reportedly proposed awarding Trump a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to prevent war. Trump accepted an invitation to visit Pakistan, a rare diplomatic gesture.

Key Points:

  • Trump credited India and Pakistan leaders, not himself, for ending conflict.

  • Meeting with Pakistan army chief focused on regional security and trade.

  • Modi emphasized India-Pakistan direct military dialogue ended hostilities.

  • Trump showed interest in boosting trade and cooperation with Pakistan.

  • Munir invited Trump to visit Pakistan officially.
