Mumbai Local Train Accident Sparks Nationwide Outrage; Railway Minister’s Silence Deepens Public Anger

June 10, 2025 | Mumbai:
A tragic accident near Mumbra station on Mumbai’s Central Railway line on Monday morning left 13 passengers falling from a moving local train. Of them, four lost their lives, two are critically injured, and the rest are undergoing treatment. While this incident sparked discussions across the country, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw chose not to comment on the issue.

During a press conference held in Delhi to mark one year of the Modi 3.0 government, Ashwini Vaishnaw was asked about the Mumbai train accident by a journalist from Loksatta. He responded briefly, stating that “the Railway Ministry has already issued a statement, so there’s no need to say anything more,” and left without elaborating.

Key Details:

  • 13 passengers fell from an overcrowded local train near Mumbra station

  • 4 died, 2 are in critical condition

  • Passenger unions claim the Railways were already alerted about the crowding between Diva and Kalwa

  • Despite warnings, no action was taken, say union leaders

  • Minister Vaishnaw avoided answering questions on the accident during the press briefing

Passenger associations have strongly condemned the government’s lack of action and empathy. “Are the vermilion and dignity of Mumbai’s women not important? Why do accidents continue despite claims of railway modernization?” asked a furious commuters' group. They also accused the authorities of ignoring warnings about excessive crowding on curves near the Diva-Kalwa section, which they say led to the tragic fall of passengers.

Public Outrage Mounts:

  • Families of victims mourn young breadwinners lost in the accident

  • Demands for a separate corporation to manage Mumbai’s suburban railway are gaining traction

  • MNS leader Raj Thackeray has called for a protest rally

The silence from a usually social media-active Railway Minister has not gone unnoticed. Citizens are questioning: "Why speak proudly of development, but remain silent during a tragedy?"
