It was formed in January 2021 by the Indian National Congress (INC), the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation, the Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM), and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). The alliance was formed to contest the 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly election.

The Mahajot was led by the INC, and its main goal was to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which was the incumbent government in Assam. The alliance also aimed to promote secularism and democracy in the state.

The Mahajot won 50 seats in the 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly election, while the BJP won 75 seats. The alliance was unable to defeat the BJP, but it did increase its tally of seats from 26 in the previous election.

The Mahajot has continued to exist after the 2021 election, and it has been involved in several political developments in Assam. In 2022, the alliance supported the candidature of Akhil Gogoi, a former student leader, in the Rajya Sabha election. Gogoi was elected to the Rajya Sabha, and he is the first independent candidate to be elected to the Upper House from Assam.
