Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed at Calgary International Airport early Tuesday to participate in the G7 Summit 2025, hosted in Kananaskis, Alberta. The visit is being closely watched globally, as it marks Modi’s first visit to Canada in a decade — and the first since diplomatic relations soured in 2023 following the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
This is PM Modi’s first visit to Canada since 2015.
It’s his first bilateral engagement with Canada’s new PM, Mark Carney, after ties between the two nations reached historic lows.
The visit is seen as a significant step toward resetting Indo-Canadian relations, particularly after a turbulent period marked by diplomatic expulsions and security tensions.
In 2023, the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia caused a diplomatic rift between New Delhi and Ottawa. Canada’s previous Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged Indian involvement, a claim India vehemently denied. In response, both nations expelled diplomats and downgraded official communication.
With Mark Carney assuming office in March 2025, India expressed optimism about rebuilding ties "based on mutual trust and sensitivity." National security officials from both sides have resumed discussions, and new high commissioners are likely to be appointed soon.
