CBSE Makes 75% Attendance & Internal Assessment Mandatory for Board Results (2025 Update)

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has clarified that 75% attendance and completion of internal assessments are mandatory for students of Classes X and XII to have their board exam results declared. The move aligns with NEP-2020’s emphasis on continuous evaluation and experiential learning.

Why attendance and internal assessment matter

CBSE’s notice reiterates that internal assessment is a compulsory and integral part of overall student evaluation. Because internal assessments are carried out by schools across a two-year cycle (Classes IX–X and XI–XII), the board has made clear that results cannot be declared if a student’s internal assessment record is missing.

“In the absence of performance in internal assessment, a student’s result cannot be declared. Such students, even if they are regular students, will be placed in ‘Essential Repeat Category,’” the CBSE said.

What is the Essential Repeat Category?

The Essential Repeat Category is for students who either fail to clear the board exams or lack necessary internal assessment records. Students in this category are not eligible for the compartment exam if they:

  • Fail in more than two subjects out of five in Class X
  • Fail in more than one subject out of five in Class XII

These students must re-appear for the full board exams the following year to clear the examination.

Two-year programmes: continuous evaluation explained

CBSE underlines that Classes X and XII are two-year programmes: IX–X and XI–XII. All subjects are taught across the two years and internal assessments (which may include school exams, projects, and day-to-day activities such as homework) contribute to the final marks.

Reaction from principals and schools

Principals from several CBSE schools welcomed the directive as a means to improve regularity and academic consistency. School leaders highlighted that continuous testing and weighted assessments throughout the year ensure that students cannot rely on last-minute preparation.

Practical steps for students and parents

  1. Ensure minimum 75% attendance across the academic year (check your school’s attendance calendar).
  2. Participate in all internal assessments — written tests, projects, practicals, and classroom activities.
  3. Keep copies or digital records of project submissions and teacher feedback where possible.
  4. If you are at risk of missing assessments due to unavoidable reasons (medical, transfer), contact the school administration immediately to request documentation and guidance.

Key takeaways

  • 75% attendance is mandatory for CBSE students to be eligible for board exam results.
  • Internal assessment is compulsory and a two-year continuous process.
  • Missing internal assessment records can lead to placement in the Essential Repeat Category and loss of compartment eligibility.

FAQ

What happens if my internal assessment record is missing?
If internal assessment performance is not recorded, CBSE may not declare the result. The student could be placed in the Essential Repeat Category.
Can I appear for the compartment exam?
Not if you have failed more than two subjects in Class X or more than one subject in Class XII, or if you lack required internal assessment records. Such students are not eligible for the compartment exam.
How is internal assessment evaluated?
It commonly includes school-conducted written tests, projects, practicals and daily activities like homework and class participation. Each school may define weightages for these components.
